New research suggests that people who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these treatments must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle changes.
