British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several entry passages leading to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
